Bert Lopez is the officer that has become viral on the internet caught on a surveillance camera having sex on the hood of his woman-friends car… with the woman’s Chihuahua as a witness. Mr Lopez has been fired. He has 30 days to appeal.
The infamous scene occurred just outside of Santa Fe NM at the county-owned La Bajada Ranch, which was formerly known as Santa Fe Canyon Ranch. The camera was installed – apparently without the knowledge of the officer – to capture pictures of vandals. I am sure those that installed it did not expect to capture what they did.
Bert Lopez was also the “State Police Officer of the Year” in State Police District 1 in 2010.

UPDATE: Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2011
I reside in Albuquerque NM, and ran into my attorney-friend out of Santa Fe today and chatted about this photo… According to him, the scuttlebutt is that the dog in the picture – which belongs to the lady in the photo – was running around biting the troopers ankle and may have actually set off the surveillance camera. Personally, I can believe the story about the dog biting his ankles… but the little tiny Chihuahua setting off the camera and not the car??? But it does add a bit of flavor to the story….
Also, he (my friend) did happen to comment that this officer is a very nice man… which is unusual for my friend to say as he typically is not a fan of our local police force (although this is a state trooper, the Justice Dept is investigating our local ABQ police force for too many police shootings & killings) . Looks as though Mr Trooper here made a very bad judgment call. Next time, I advise a hotel room.

I am completely speechless… well, sort of….
There are many wonderful officers out there in this country… this world. But sadly, there are many who do not wear their uniform and carry their badge as they were meant to, and the numbers seem to be increasing.
I wonder if the dog in the picture will be a testifying witness to the event…..
He was placed on administrative leave with pay after surveillance photos appear to show the uniformed trooper engaging in sex with a woman on a car in broad daylight.
The photos did not contain a date stamp, but the sheriff’s office said they were taken two weeks ago from a camera used to record graffiti vandals at an entrance to the spacial Santa Fe Ranch.
State Police will not comment about the pictures or any internal investigation against the officer, saying it is an ongoing personnel matter.
Santa Fe Sheriff Robert A. Garcia said the trooper does not face legal action because even though there may be evidence of a lack of judgment, an actual crime was not committed.
Lack of judgment………… You think?
I met this kindly gentleman while walking around Seattle taking some footage of the night life at Pike Place Market one evening while in town on business. We struck up a wonderful, intriguing conversation which I thoroughly enjoyed. Initially he approached me asking for a cigarette – which I happily surrendered – than simply began talking. During his approach, I noticed his gait was one of pain as he was obviously dependent upon the cane he used.
There is only one word to describe this… WOW!!!!
TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — Libyan rebels who took control of Moammar Gadhafi’s sprawling compound made a surprising discovery in one of the buildings: a photo album with pictures of Condoleezza Rice.
Though maybe the discovery isn’t that surprising. Over the years, the Libyan leader’s comments and actions related to the former secretary of state have raised a few eyebrows. More…

7.05pm ET: Time for a summary of the day’s news as Hurricane Irene carved its way up the United States’ Atlantic coast, Saturday:
• At least five fatalities have now been attributed to the storm. Three of these deaths were caused, directly or indirectly, by trees felled by high winds. In Florida, a surfer was killed while attempting to take advantage of the hurricane-powered waves.
• Approximately 1 million Americans – in North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and DC – are without electricity. The mayor of Philadelphia in Pennsylvania has warned citizens that outages could last for days, even weeks. As Irene heads north, that number is likely to grow.
• Hundreds of thousands of people have been ordered to evacuate coastal and low-lying areas along the eastern seaboard. As many as 1 million people have left the Jersey shore. In New York City, Mayor Michael Bloomberg has warned that “we are going to break down doors if we have to” to enforce the evacuation.
• Transport has ground to a virtual halt on the east coast. Some 9,000 flights have been cancelled from affected airports. In New York, all public transport has closed down until Monday.
• Despite Irene losing force, downgraded to category 1, storm surges and heavy rains are creating danger of widespread flooding. In northern New England, Vermont’s governor has declared a state of emergency, with flooding predicted in every river in the state.
With that, Matt Seaton is signing off. Matt Wells continues the service shortly. Good night, Irene.

An Italian radio program’s story about Iceland’s on-going revolution is a stunning example of how little our media tells us about the rest of the world. Americans may remember that at the start of the 2008 financial crisis, Iceland literally went bankrupt. The reasons were mentioned only in passing, and since then, this little-known member of the European Union fell back into oblivion.
I firmly believe each and everyone of us has a choice of our freedom of religion. However, our country was founded on the separation of church and state. When mixing politics and religion, one is only opening up a whole new can of worms. The religious background of any political leader will differ from a significant percentage of the citizens of their country. Therefore, how can one impose their own religious views upon those of others which vary? More…

A lawyer for Damien Echols – one of the so-called West Memphis 3 freed from death row in Arkansas – said his client celebrated his first night of freedom in 18 years.
Steven Braga, the attorney for Damien Echols, told “The Early Show on Saturday Morning” that his client’s first night of freedom was “unbelievable.”
He described a celebration last night Echols and James Baldwin, shared with supporters in Memphis: “It was as if you could see two little 5-year-old kids at their first Christmas. They were trying food they had never seen before, they were fascinated by a cell phone, more fascinated by an iPhone and then the idea you could take pictures with an iPhone totally blew them away, so they were taking a lot of pictures.”
CBS Affiliate WREG reports that the third freed man, Jesse Misskelley, opted to celebrate with family Friday.
Echols, Baldwin and Misskelley were teenagers in 1994 when they were convicted of killing three eight-year-old boys – Steve Branch, Christopher Byers and Michael Moore.
Investigators in this rural community believed that the teenagers (who wore black and listened to heavy metal music) killed the children as part of a satanic ritual. Echols was sentenced to death; Baldwin and Misskelly both got life in prison.
Over the years doubts emerged about their guilt and several celebrities pushed to have them set free, reports “48 Hours” correspondent Erin Moriarty. DNA evidence has been recovered at the scene, none of it linking the accused to the crime.
Baldwin almost turned down the deal that freed him and the others from prison yesterday, but it wasn’t just about him. The highly unusual plea agreement meant that his friend Echols – on death row for 17 years – would get his life back.
“Still very much in shock, still overwhelmed,” said Echols Friday.
Their freedom comes at a high price: Under the agreement, known as an Alford plea, the men who still say they are innocent had to plead guilty to murder.
“‘We’ll let you go only if you admit guilt,’” Baldwin described it. “That’s not justice, no matter how you look at it.
LOL! This is great! Seriously, though… this woman is a candidate for the President of the United States? If she wins – which will never happen – I’m leaving the country and hiding in shame.

The Malaysian student, Ashraf Haziq, who was mugged and robbed on video, is now recovering in a hospital with a broken jaw. One of the robbers has possibly been identified, according to Channel 4 News out of the UK.
Out of this internet viral video is possibly another form of robbery. A site called “Something Nice for Ashraf” has been created asking for donations and provides a direct link to PayPal. No other information provided.
Smells fishy to me. According to a comment I received from a Malaysian citizen, the Malaysian government will fully compensate him for his full expenses. I clicked on the donation link simply to check it out, which does go into PayPal, but no where does it show who is receiving these donations. Could be anybody. And where is the proof that even one penny goes to Ashraf? I checked out the twitter name on the site, @jamiecowen, and there is little to no information there, either. An avatar with a “Save the Children” emblem in it… but anyone can create and upload that for their avatar. A few tweets… nothing more. An legitimate organization asking for donations for a cause always provides a LOT more information and proof than this donation site does.
If Malaysia is going to reimburse, then why is this person accepting donations for Ashraf?
Do not get me wrong… I feel horrible about what happened to Ashraf. But that does not automatically make this site legit only because I – or we – want it to be. This whole donation setup sounds like a scam to me. If so, this is just as bad as those people are who robbed him out of his rucksack as he stood their bleeding.
Perfect example of how the media attempts to control the news….

Over the past several days, people have been rioting in the streets of London, looting, injuring others, and creating complete mayhem. Why? Apparently this was incited by the shooting and death of Mark Duggan, a 29-year-old resident of Tottenham. Who is Mark Duggan? In searching various news stories, blog postings, and the like on the internet, who he is depends upon which site you read. Those in defense of his shooting portray him as a thug. Those defending Mark describe him as “a good man. He was a family man.” His fiancee has, according to Guardian.co.uk website, admitted he is “known to the police and said he had spent some time on remand, but denied he was ever imprisoned.” What actually occurred to bring on this shooting? I doubt we will ever know the true, actual facts. The police will tell one story, and the witnesses will state another. Or possibly somewhere in between. This may have been a justifiable shooting, or it may not have been… I do not know. I was not there.
Many articles are portraying him as a “gangsta.” But then, I honestly do not trust a lot of the media. The images of him online do show a gangster persona, but where are other pictures of him? Surely he has not had just three or four pictures taken of him in his life. When possible I prefer to read facts from various viewpoints and usually determine that the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle. A significant percentage of mainstream news sites and channels only tell you what they want you to know, not what is actual. Or tell you what they think will bring the views, the hits, the attention, and the money. More…
Las Vegas, Nevada (CNN) — In the Masquerade wing of the Rio Hotel and Casino in the gambling capital of the world, there’s a giant statue of a head hanging over a lobby of slot machines.
The masked figure has two faces and four digital eyes — clairvoyant blue — that track back and forth constantly, as if recording the movements of everyone who enters.
That awkwardly self-conscious — even slightly paranoid — feeling you get from seeing being watched by that enormous casino head is pretty much a steady-state for most of the hackers who attend the DEF CON hacker event, taking place at the Rio this weekend.
Started 19 years ago as an underground gathering of sometimes-nefarious computer wizards, DEF CON has sprawled into a 15,000-person, four-day convention where anyone with $150 — in cash only, please, lest these hackers give up their identities — can learn the latest tricks and trade of computer hacking, lock picking and security breaching.
The aim of the event is to better inform both insiders and everyday people about the risks of operating in our increasingly digital world and to work on solutions. But the practical result of gathering this many highly skilled hackers in one building — in a Las Vegas casino, no less — is that everyone here is experiencing some level of terror.
Insiders say there’s no place on Earth where you’re more likely to get hacked.
“You’re on the most hostile network in the world. If you can perform business here, you can do it anywhere,” said Brian Markus, referring to the public Wi-Fi network at DEF CON, which veterans know to steer clear of.
Unlike at other tech events, which tend to focus on Facebook-like concepts such as “sharing” and “connecting,” DEF CON is all about who can stay the most private, and therefore, who will remain the most secure in this digital war zone.
Those who don’t are shamed into doing so.
Markus, for example, sits in a dark room in the Rio’s conference center watching Internet traffic. When he sees a password fly across the connection, which is often, he posts part of it, along with the user’s log-in name and the site he or she was using, on a large projection screen, which he calls the “Wall of Sheep” (pictured above).
Within an hour of watching for passwords on Friday morning, his team from Aries Security had racked up 10 half-shaded passwords. (The team, and others, can see the full passwords and usernames, but they choose to protect the victims by only displaying the first three characters of each password. Kind of them, huh?)
So, how does one avoid the “Wall of Sheep”?
Markus suggests scrambling your Internet connection.
There are several free services that will do this, including OpenVPN and Ace VPN. That way, if someone like him is “sniffing” the Wi-Fi connection you’re using, they won’t be able to see exactly what you’re up to.
Another method: Type in “https” instead of “http” in your browser bar. That puts you on a more secure version of many major websites.
Plenty of people, however, are subjected to more sophisticated hacks.
Dan Kaminsky, one of the world’s most notable do-gooder hackers, said he had his personal passwords, e-mails and instant messages with a girlfriend dumped out into the public domain at a previous DEF CON event.
“If you walk onto a battlefield, you might get shot,” he said.
People still try to dodge the bullets, though.
As he darted through a mob of black-T-shirt-wearing convention attendees, Eli, better known by his hacker handle “Dead Addict,” told me how much he hates crowds.
Not only is there the social anxiety, there’s also the chance someone with an RFID reader and an antenna in their backpack could swipe your credit card info right out of your pocket.
The readers are the size of an old Walkman and, with a proper antenna, can grab data right off of credit cards that use quick-swipe technology (you can tell if you have one of these cards by looking for a little radio-wave symbol).
Eli, who started hacking in his teens and stopped breaking into corporate sites after all of his friends got arrested for doing the same thing, carries a metal-lined wallet to block this attack.
Other DEF CON veterans said they purchase junk computers they can throw away after the convention because they figure they’re going to get infected. Eli says he just leaves the laptop at home.
Most of the attendees carry cash. No one uses the ATMs after an incident in 2009 in which someone rolled a fake ATM machine into the event, according to Wired, and apparently used it to collect credit card information instead of dispensing money.
There’s also the anonymity of it all. Some hackers only go by their handles. Others don’t want digital records they attended the event, which does not require attendees to register or give their real names.
I got an e-mail warning me about some of these security idiosyncrasies before I got on a plane for Vegas. Written by a DEF CON spokeswoman, and reprinted with her permission, the note was full of jaw-dropping advice:
Hi John,
Great talking with you!
You are about to enter one the most hostile environments in the world. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind …
• Your hotel key card can be scanned by touch, so keep it deep in your wallet.
• Do not use the ATM machines anywhere near either conference. Bring cash and a low balance credit card with just enough to get you through the week.
• Turn off Fire Sharing, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on all devices. Don’t use the Wi-Fi network unless you are a security expert; we have wired lines for you to use.
• Don’t accept gifts, unless you know the person very well – a USB device for instance.
• Make sure you have strong passwords on ALL your devices. Don’t send passwords “in the clear,” make sure they are encrypted. Change your passwords immediately after leaving Vegas.
• Don’t leave a device out of sight, even for a moment.
• People are watching you at all times, especially if you are new to the scene.
• Talk quietly. Conduct confidential phone calls off site …
That is it for now.
For now?
After seeing that, I left my credit cards, debit card and company laptop in my hotel room — hidden, of course, since I’m on this newly paranoid kick. I kept my iPhone on “airplane” mode for most of Friday, turning it on only to send a couple texts.
I was particularly concerned about this phone hacking stuff, so I asked Austin Steed, another security researcher-slash-hacker about that.
He said mischievous hackers can install their own cell phone towers to intercept your calls before passing them on to the real mobile carrier. These “man-in-the-middle attacks,” he said, let hackers eavesdrop, but they can also alter the conversation you’re having, without your knowledge.
“You send a text saying ‘I love you,’ and he (the hacker) says, ‘I want to break up with you.’” Or worse than that, Markus said, you could be doing business — maybe the hacker would change “sell it all” to “buy it all,” with potentially huge ramifications.
The hackers who attend DEF CON — now in their thirties instead of their teens as they were at the start of the hacker movement — hope, in a strange way, that by teaching people about hacking they will make the tech world safer.
DEF CON is their playground of sorts. Many of the hacks aren’t necessarily malicious. They are people toying around just to see what’s possible.
If they don’t do it, then the really bad guys will, they say. There are sessions on cracking Google, PayPal, Apple — even cars and prison cells.
DEF CON attendees can also learn how to pick locks. On Friday, 17-year-old Cherry Rose de los Reyes picked her first lock while her dad, Roselito, an IT professional, watched admiringly.
“I think I got it,” she said, turning a key she had reverse-engineered.
“There, now I don’t have to pay Home Depot no more!” her dad said with a laugh.
Some parents might cringe at a dad helping his teenage daughter learn a skill that could be used for breaking and entering. But Roselito de los Reyes says they’d be missing the point.
It’s not about breaking the lock, he said, it’s about learning the lock can be broken.
“If you educate them not to have a false sense of security just because you have a lock, then being able to open a lock might teach them to use a barbell on the door at home.”
So maybe there’s a point to the paranoia after all.

Many of the toughest sentencing laws responsible for the explosion of the U.S. prison population were drafted by the American Legislative Exchange Council, which helps corporations write model legislation. Now a new exposé reveals ALEC has paved the way for states and corporations to replace unionized workers with prison labor. We speak with Mike Elk, contributing labor reporter at The Nation magazine. He says ALEC and private prison companies “put a mass amount of people in jail, and then they created a situation where they could exploit that.” Elk notes that in 2005 more than 14 million pounds of beef infected with rat feces processed by inmates were not recalled, in order to avoid drawing attention to how many products are made by prison labor. Interesting.
Is this what it will take to get our elected officials to listen to the people? It is known that a significant percentage of the GOP’s – and to be fair, many Democrats – listen to the lobbyists and those with the large bank accounts, such as the Koch Brothers. They no longer listen to the majority. Amongst many issues at hand, the people wanted the tax loopholes and large corporation tax shelters to be changed… this did not happen. This only goes to show that those with the money are the true rulers of our government and country.
