Coitus Interruptus | Fossilized Turtles Caught in the Act 5

Modern Day Pig-Nosed Turtle

Talk about having a bad day… fossilized turtles caught in the act – yes, the act of having sex. Researchers can only speculate, but one possibility of a death trap during copulation was when the mating turtles were caught as they sank to deeper layers of the lake nearly 50 million years ago. The lake’s deep layers may have held deadly volcanic gases or other toxins.

The fossils were discovered at the Messel Pit in Germany which once was a deep volcanic crater lake in a wet, tropical environment. It has become the richest site in the world for understanding the living environment of the Eocene, the epoch between 57 million and 36 million years ago when mammals began conquering the planet. Other animals discovered there include early horses, reptiles, primates, honeybees, giant ants and countless birds and bats.

LinkedIn Passwords Hacked – Change your password NOW! 7

If you have a LinkedIn account, I strongly encourage you to change your password immediately. If you are using this same password on any other site, it is very wise to change that one as well. I also read the eHarmony was hacked, so if you have an account there, change that password, too.

First, a very brief “lecture” on passwords… hackers know what they’re doing. Please do not EVER use a password that is a “no-duh” password, like your dogs name and a birthday combined together. All someone has to do is bounce around on Facebook, your blog, or the like, see you have 3 kids, 2 dogs and one cat. Somewhere I’m sure you’ve shared their names. Eventually, it all fits together and you are hacked. And for Horus’s sake, NEVER use the same password on more than one account.

The Internet is Switching to IPv6 Offering 340 Undecillion IP Addresses 22

Undecillion? That was the first time I had heard that “number.” When searching the definition, some were vague and undecillion basically means a number with a LOT of zeros behind it. Technically, I found the definition to be:

The cardinal number equal to 10 to the 36th power.

Chiefly British. The cardinal number equal to 10 to the 66th power.

LOL… when I was young, a zillion was big! Not anymore.

Photos from Annular Solar Eclipse, May 20 2012, Albuquerque NM 37

Here are some photos from the annular eclipse on May 20, 2012. All taken in Albuquerque, New Mexico right next to the airport.

Myself and my friend, Dave, were the first two there as we got there early. Shortly another car rolled in, and another. We ended up having about 15 cars there. Most people were from out of state. Our “neighbors” came in from North Carolina. There was another gentleman from Maryland. I heard another woman mention she was from Kansas City, MO… and so on. Several telescopes were set up. Everyone bounced around from telescope to telescope to see the event. It was a wonderful day.

The G’morning Shot for May 21, 2012 9

Ring of Fire, annular solar eclipse. I did not take this and do not know who did. It came across my Facebook page. All I know it that it was taken in Roswell, NM. I love how it was taken through the trees and appears no filter was used – the photographer may have dropped the exposure all the way down. Regardless, it is a phenomenal photo.

The Parting Shot for May 20, 2012 11

The Annular Solar Eclipse. This is the photo I took when the moon was in the dead-center, middle of the sun. An absolutely SPECTACULAR event and evening. Albuquerque NM, where I live, was the “hot spot” for the eclipse as the path was a direct line through the city.

It truly was a magical evening. I will be posting more photos tomorrow. I do all my photography in raw format so I go through my images one at a time, tweak then convert to jpg. A bit time-consuming, but worth it. Image is much better in full size, so just click on it, please.

I am locked and loaded and ready to go! Solar eclipse, here I come! 14

LOL… no, not locked and loaded as in guns, rather photography. This evening, right before sunset is an annular eclipse. Lucky me… Albuquerque is the spot to be! Here are some of the details….

• Sun will be low on the horizon for the event.

• The centerline for the event passes nearly through the Albuquerque International Airport. Any location in the metro area will provide an excellent view of the eclipse.

First Face Transplant Gives an Amazing Transformation | Photos 5

Here are some photos from TIME Photos which show the transformation of Richard Lee Norris’s faces before and after the first-ever facial transplant.

According to TIME, the Office of Naval Research has funded work into vascularized composite transplantation that led to a vascularized composite allograft – a face transplant – for a 37-year old Virginia man at the University of Maryland a week ago. There are some 200 U.S. veterans who might benefit from such an operation.

Amazing Interactive Site | The Scale of the Universe 10

An absolutely phenomenal interactive site which allows you to zoom in and out, depending upon where you want to start or go, by using the scroll bar. I also found using the left/right buttons work as well. Clicking on any of the objects will provide you with the size of that item. Obviously, these are of an average size.

A Journey to the The Great Pacific Garbage Patch 12

This video is a very well produced “mockumentary” which follows the journey of a plastic bag from a California city to the ocean with it’s final destination of the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch.” At the bottom of this post are some photos, but I will warn you, some of them are disturbing.

Red Hot Chili Peppers New Release | An INTERACTIVE Video (this is great!) 5

The Red Hot Chili Peppers just released an interactive version of the music video for the band’s latest single, “Look Around.”

First of all, I’m a Red Hot Chili Pepper fan. Reminds me of my days of rock climbing and working at the climbing gym. In putting that aside, this song and video both rock! The interactiveness is fun, and I am not a gamer.

Users can pan the camera back and forth between rooms at will, zoom in and out of different aspects — and discover hidden easter eggs that contain links to photos and videos.

Stopped They Must Be; On This All Depends | SOPA PIPA 2

Just blogged today on Reddit’s blog:

The freedom, innovation, and economic opportunity that the Internet enables is in jeopardy. Congress is considering legislation that will dramatically change your Internet experience and put an end to reddit and many other sites you use everyday. Internet expertsorganizations, companies, entrepreneurslegal expertsjournalists, and individuals have repeatedly expressed how dangerous this bill is. If we do nothing, Congress will likely pass the Protect IP Act (in the Senate) or the Stop Online Piracy Act (in the House), and then the President will probably sign it into law. There are powerful forces trying to censor the Internet, and a few months ago many people thought this legislation would surely pass. However, there’s a new hope that we can defeat this dangerous legislation. More…

Top Ten Countries Using Solar Power | Infographic 8

Despite a shaky European economy and the recent prominent failure of a U.S.-based panel manufacturer, the solar market at large has continued its upward trajectory of rapid growth in the last two years. Lower costs, new applications, and plenty of investor interest have helped these 10 countries become the world’s leaders in installed solar. More…

GoDaddy Being Difficult to Those Transferring From Them 4

Just last week, GoDaddy was on the list of supporters for SOPA.  After they started seeing their profits falling due to the large volume of clients transferring their domains and services, GoDaddy then rescinded their support.  However, the damage has been done, and their true colors are showing.

According to Namecheap (also promoting a “Move Your Domain Day“), a very popular domain and hosting company where a lot of “GoDaddy’ers” are transferring to, posted this just today: More…

Black Mirror: 15 Million Merits 3

Someone sent me the link for the first part of a five part upload of this episode.  I watched it and couldn’t stop until I had finished them all.  Imagine a world where everything you do either deducts or adds merits.  A bit of toothpaste needed to brush your teeth once deducts merits.  Riding a stationary bike, which is a job to provide power to all the TV screens, adds merits.  And to skip a pornographic commercial is a major deduction of merits.  You are not even allowed to close your eyes during the commercial else face a horrific piercing sound and red lights until you re-open your eyes. The Inner Guts of My Computer | Before and After Photos 12

After

Well, today was a quiet, peaceful Christmas day, which is exactly what I needed.  Spent some time with someone very dear to me, and also managed to get quite a bit done computer-wise.  Reinstalled Ubuntu on one of my laptops, set up Filezilla, installed a new router, started researching other hosting companies to move to and get off of GoDaddy, and… cleaned my computer.  I live in New Mexico and, well, this is the desert and there is a LOT of dust here.  Especially after the drought we’ve been in for a year now.  So thought I would share some before and after pictures.  This is only after five months as my system was cleaned out just last July. Companies in Support of SOPA Now Being Boycotted 9

Should SOPA pass, my fellow-internet cohorts… our world will change.  Take this image I created… a scene from Pirates of the Caribbean where I masked in a Vaio and an HP laptop.  Should H.R. 3261 pass, then this would no longer be “legal.”  Even though I make NO monies from this little creation, my site could potentially be banned.  In fact, what I have created is in all actuality, free advertising!  Think about it….  All the product placement going on in movies and in TV shows… the thousands into millions of dollars spent by companies simply to have their logo or product shown at some point in time.  In fact, I think Disney, Vaio and HP should pay ME for the image I created just for this post.
