I captured a Hummingbird-Moth… with my camera 8

I had no idea there was such a creature. I stepped outside earlier this morning to take a break from the computer and noticed what was not unlike a hummingbird flitting around from flower to flower. But it’s speed just wasn’t quite fast enough. Oh, this creature could move much better than most insects, but just didn’t have that “zip-zip” of a hummingbird. Plus, it allowed me to get much closer than birds do – and that’s when I noticed the antennae. I definitely knew then that it wasn’t a hummingbird. I wanted some photos but did not come out with my camera. Luckily, it hung around long enough for me to run inside, grab my camera – and even change lens – and get a few fairly decent shots.  More…

Today I captured a Woodpecker… with my camera 17

I am an amateur. No ifs, ands, or buts. I feel I have a better than average eye, but no where near professional. Although I LOVE wildlife, I have found I favor urban photography. I find people absolutely and utterly fascinating both from a sociological perspective as well as visual. So that is where most of my photography has been. I don’t have the patience for wildlife photography, I suppose. Having to wait sometimes for days, if not weeks or months for that perfect shot. Humph, then if I do finally get to see that critter, it’s out of my site, or partially out of site by the time I get my camera focused. I think I’ll stick to people and items that just don’t move that fast. Although I do enjoy macros photography, and there’s often plenty of time for me to focus. I just need a real macros lens…. Anyway…..  More…

Absolutely Ghastly Ways to Die… If You’re An Arthropod (a bug) 7

FYI… IzaakMak, you may want to skip this one.

An entertaining and informative article from Scientific American. Here are a few of the more horrifying ways a beetle can kick the bug-et (oh, ouch) or agonizing arthropod annihilations. After seeing these photos and reading the deathly demise of a dragonfly done in by another dastardly demon (hey, I’m trying…), I don’t feel quite so bad when I accidentally step on a crunchy creepy-crawly now. At least it’s quicker and much less painful than some of these ways….

Each shows a more advanced stage of development, with noticeably longer wings and larger ears.

Meet My Little Friend…. 16

I have been watching this spider live and grow right outside one of our windows under our 24/7 outdoor light. I first saw this Black and Yellow Garden Spider back in August (maybe a little before that??) and have since peek to check on it from time to time. Make sure she’s in the center of her web. It really has been fascinating. She’s close to twice as large now compared to back in August. I have not seen her pounce nor do anything cool like that with her meal. But she did relocate her home – and lost a leg.

Beautiful and Adorable Pictures of Animals 11

A wide variety of animals featured here. Some are wild, some are pets, some rescued, some at the zoo…. So get your “awwww’s” all ready to go because there are a few of them.

But they should all at least make you smile.

Photo credits are completely unknown. These images were sent to me via email from a friend. I have seen a few of them roaming around the internet, but still do not know who took those either.

One ‘possum v. five terrified humans and other humorous videos with animals 2

.

I have found this video to be absolutely hilarious! A opossum snuck into someone’s kitchen, probably for food, and was discovered. But the reaction of the family is what is so priceless. Definitely not staged or fake – which is why I like it so much.

Poll: What would you do here in “Spider City”? 8

LOL… I have seen the image before, a year or two ago for the first time, and many times since then. It still amazes me… there are a LOT of spiders hanging out between these two old cars (pardon the pun – intentional)! Just the other day, I found a version with the caption shown below – but I did my own copy since the one on Facebook wasn’t looking very good.
