Private prisons are the biggest shame of our country – to profit off of the incarceration of people. No other country in the world makes any type of profit from their prisons. But here, the value of stocks depend upon the number of people locked up in our private prisons.

Now, Louisiana now holds the world record as the state imprisons more people per capita than any other state or country in the world, with one out of every 86 adults behind bars. Its rate of incarceration is three times higher than Iran’s and 10 times higher than Germany’s.

Here is a very well done report about the women’s prison in New Mexico. This report briefly covers the dog rescue and training program, Heeling Hearts. I am one of the original volunteers who helped coordinate and set up this program. I was unemployed during that time, which was back in 2007, therefore I was able to volunteer quite a bit of time then. My dear friend, Lyn, is still in charge of and running the program, so I get keep up with her about what is going on with the dogs and the women in the program.

Private prisons are one of the largest corporations in history to profit directly from the misery of people, and now they want to buy out state-ran facilities. The main stream media is not helping matters either as they simply sweep the details under the rug, and promote the false notion that criminals get what they ask for. Most American citizens live under the philosophy simply because they grew up hearing, “Lock them up and throw away the key.” What would you think if you found out that most of the inmates in private prisons really do not belong there? Not in prison, anyway. Laws are being created due to the heavily financed lobbying by CCA and GEO Group which are purely passed to increase the prison population. Why? Because for every inmate housed, those who own stock in a private prison profit each day per each inmate. There are no losses… pure profit.

If you are not familiar with private prisons, they are prisons built and owned by private companies, stockholders, shareholders, etc.  Each investor makes a profit for each inmate housed in their private prison company.

Why should you be concerned about criminals and prisons?  Because the vast majority of those held in these prisons should NOT be there!  The laws and courts are sentencing an ever increasing number of citizens, and illegal immigrants, to prison purely for profit.  Take note of the correlation of the rise of the prison population is equal to the origination of these prisons in the early 1980′s.  Now with the passing of NDAA FY2012, and the threat of SOPA, this makes any normal, law-abiding citizen a potential candidate to reside in a private prison. New Exposé Tracks ALEC-Private Prison Industry Effort to Replace Unionized Workers with Prison Labor 4

Many of the toughest sentencing laws responsible for the explosion of the U.S. prison population were drafted by the American Legislative Exchange Council, which helps corporations write model legislation. Now a new exposé reveals ALEC has paved the way for states and corporations to replace unionized workers with prison labor. We speak with Mike Elk, contributing labor reporter at The Nation magazine. He says ALEC and private prison companies “put a mass amount of people in jail, and then they created a situation where they could exploit that.” Elk notes that in 2005 more than 14 million pounds of beef infected with rat feces processed by inmates were not recalled, in order to avoid drawing attention to how many products are made by prison labor. New report in from Dailykos.com, “Private prison companies boost incarceration rates for profit”

A new report from the reformist Justice Policy Institute concludes that private prison companies have not only benefited from increased incarceration, they have also helped fuel it.

According to Gaming the System: How the Political Strategies of Private Prison Companies Promote Ineffective Incarceration Policies, private prisons have increased their “market share” of the overall prison population. While the number of inmates over the past decade has risen 16 percent, the number in private federal facilities has risen 120 percent and the number in state facilities has risen 33 percent. Meanwhile, the two largest private prison operators, Correction Corporations of America and GEO Group (formerly Wackenhut), raked in a combined $2.9 billion in revenue in 2010. More…

CCA’s involvement with SCOTUS ruling to release CA prisoners 3

On May 23rd, 2011, SCOTUS (Supreme Court of the US) ruled in Brown v. Plata that California must reduce its prison population by over 30,000 prisoners. Why? Because their system was so severely overcrowded that the medical neglect prisoners were facing amounted to a violation of their 8th Amendment right to be free from cruel and unusual punishment. That’s some mightily deficient medical care.

California has been facing a crisis in its prison system for decades, as the sentencing reforms that came as a result of the War on Drugs and other initiatives have steered an ever-increasing segment of the populace into prison. Arguably most impactful in this regard is California’s “Three Strikes” laws, which mandate a life sentence for anyone convicted of a third felony charge, whether that charge be for murder or larceny, rape or possession of a controlled substance. California’s prison population has grown dramatically under this legislation. More…

Georgia Governor Signs Immigration Bill Into Law 4

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal has signed a bill that cracks down on illegal immigration by increasing some enforcement powers and requiring many employers to check the immigration status of new hires.

Deal on Friday signed the bill that has some similarities to a controversial bill enacted last year in Arizona.

Most parts of the Georgia law are set to enter into effect July 1. But opponents have said they plan to file lawsuits seeking to block it.

A requirement for private employers to use a federal database to check the immigration status of new hires is set to be phased in.

The new law also authorizes law enforcement officers to check the immigration status of certain suspects and to detain those who are in the country illegally. More…
