“At a press conference in Toledo, Bob King, President of the United Automobile Workers (UAW), will announce that his union and Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) have filed a formal complaint with the US Office of Government Ethics in Washington stating that Gov. Romney improperly hid a profit of $15.3 million to $115.0 million in Ann Romney’s so-called “blind” trust.”
Below is an infographic showing the “World’s Richest Men.” At the top of the list, out of Mexico, is the wealthiest person, Carlos Slim. Ranked by assets in US$ billions, Carlos Slim has acrued assets at approximately $74 billion.
When reading a little bit about Carlos, there was one portion of one sentence which made my skin crawl. The first sentence reads:
“The world’s richest man, who doubled his assets between 2008 and 2010, is a classic example of a tiny global elite, who have used monopolies, government corruption, and the support of the World Bank and the IMF, to privatise public resources and extract vast wealth from ordinary people, often in the global South.”
“Doublespeak. The deliberate use of ambiguous terms in order to deceive the public, is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and it’s the kind of language we hear constantly on TV. But why does the mainstream media comply with its use?
“Well, that’s what happens when governments transfer the public airwaves to private corporations in a practice known as deregulation. In this environment, reporters lose their autonomy in exchange for military protection, they are co-opted or embedded.
“A war that most nations refused to support becomes the War for Democracy.
I saw this movie when it first came out in 1988 and loved it! But back then, it was nothing but Science Fiction. Now, I no longer see it as fiction but as reality… as non-fiction. The aliens merely represent the corporations and government in our world today.
I love this segment/clip of Dylan Ratigan. He shows such anger yet passion for the economic state of our country. This was actually aired on Aug. 9th, 2011 – before the Occupy Wall Street movement. I have no words which can describe this better than simply watching. His bluntness is very relieving.
