It’s a sad day in America. North Carolina’s Amendment One has passed 13

Today our country – which was created as a Democracy – just moved one step closer into evolving into a Theocracy. North Carolina’s Amendment One passed. The law decrees that “marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State”- meaning that civil unions and potentially other types of domestic partnerships will no longer be legally recognized.

On Wednesday, March 21st, Arizona state Democratic lawmakers organized a news conference to discuss Debbie Lesko’s HB 2625 which allows any employer to opt out of providing contraception to their employees based upon their own religious beliefs. There has been a large outcry over this House Bill not only in Arizona but throughout the entire United States as the War on Women grows more heated every day.

Yesterday morning, when I learned that Zuccotti Park had been cleared overnight by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg — who justified his action in a statement that cited health and safety concerns — the first thing I did was call my lawyer. I wanted to go and show my support for the protesters’ First Amendment right “to assemble and petition government for redress of grievances” — a right that a 1925 Supreme Court decision confirmed superseded municipalities’ laws that sought to restrict its exercise. But my partner and I had already been arrested on Oct. 19 for standing peacefully on Hudson Street after informing protesters outside an event I was attending of their right to assemble. The wonderful National Lawyers Guild advised us that we would probably be O.K. — the New York police department would have to alert us before a second arrest.

Occupy / (un) Occupy Albuquerque protesters put on a wake Saturday in honor of the death of our First Amendment rights to Free Speech and Peaceful Assembly after the UNM denied renewal of their permit, and Administration banned the group from protesting on the campus – else face arrest.
