Trinity Church Statement on #OWS Protests ²

I posted yesterday about Occupy 2.0 and how Bishop George E Packard was arrested after climbing over a fence to get to Duarte Square. I have to give credit to the Bishop for standing up for the OWS movement like he has been doing.

However, my curiosity was peaked…. Why did OWS specifically choose this lot in an attempt to occupy? It is private property and owned by Trinity Church, who has told the group that the did not want OWS to occupy their park. So off to google search I go to find my answer…. More…

A woman who was pepper sprayed during during a raid on Occupy Seattle last week is blaming police after she miscarried Sunday.

Jennifer Fox, 19, told The Stranger that she had been with the Occupy protests since they started in Westlake Park. She said she was homeless and three months pregnant, but felt the need to join activists during their march last Tuesday. More…

Many cringe at these words and deny their existence within our own country, but look at what has been going on. Our First Amendment’s right to free speech and peaceful assembly is being blatantly denied. City by city, camp by camp, the police are coming in armed for warfare and using violent tactics and pepper spray on completely unarmed individuals. Where is our President during all this? Until recently, I have fully supported Obama, but now, I have some serious doubts as to whether he is acting in behalf of the people of our country – or if he is acting in behalf of those people “behind the curtain” holding all the money and corruption – in other words, the Oligarchs. Does our president need to be reminded of these very words he spoke by on January 28th in regards to the Egyptian Revolution? More…

Today, Thursday November 17th, marked the two-month anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movement. Just 60 days ago, a few hundred arrived at Wall Street to take up camp and occupy the area in protest to the greed and corruption within our government and corporations. The main stream media refused to cover the inaugural event instead covering such events such as the Tea Party. Many scoffed and did not believe this would take hold. Now the media cannot get enough coverage especially since this only brings in more profit. Look at how this has grown throughout the country with an Occupy movement in nearly every major city, and hundreds of smaller “home towns.” Not only has this spread throughout the United States, but has taken hold world-wide. I woke up to sleet pelting the windows in my toasty warm house this morning and wondered what the turnout would be like for the Bank Transfer Day rally/protest at the Bank of America in Uptown, Albuquerque NM. Fortunately, as is typical with New Mexico weather, it quickly passed. The day was cold and blustery, but spirits were high as I arrived at the pre-arranged location on Uptown Blvd. Several people already had arrived and were in various locations on both sides of Bank of America as well as along Louisiana Blvd After approximately an hour of sign waving, hand waving and thumbs up’s to the cars honking as they went by, the group then marched from BofA to Louisiana Blvd and south down to Indian School Rd where the destination was the New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union paying them respect for all they do.

Afterthought post-publishing: As an after-thought after I have published this, I have stated somewhat incorrectly…. The OWS Movement welcomes all groups and people alike. The Black Bloc is a part of OWS, just as any group. However, the actions of the Black Bloc during the strike in Oakland does not represent what the OWS movement is about.

The 99 percent were out in force on Wednesday, November 2nd, in Oakland CA. As many as 10,000 marchers protested income inequality and the big banks that crashed the global economy (and today are more profitable than ever). Schools and businesses closed in sympathy and solidarity, and the march even shut down the Port of Oakland, one of the busiest on the West Coast.

After a tumultuous week here in Albuquerque at the Occupy / (un) Occupy Albuquerque base camp called Coyote Camp, the UNM Administration has provided the group a “compromise”:

UNM will open the park from 7:30 AM to 2:30 PM, Monday through Friday, and 11:00 AM to 3 PM Saturday and Sunday.

This is horrible. A young man served our country in Iraq, came home alive only to be taken down by the police of the country of which he served. The irony of it all. A very sad state out country has become.

A U.S. Marine veteran is in a critical condition in hospital tonight after being injured by a police gas canister during last night’s Occupy Oakland protests, which saw running battles break out between authorities and protesters as a crowd tried to reclaim an encampment.

Scott Olsen, 24, of Daly City, California, an Iraq veteran and member of Veterans for Peace, suffered a skull fracture and brain swelling after being hit in the head during the riots. Officers had cleared the site of demonstrators around 12 hours earlier in a dawn raid where at least 85 people were arrested.

Occupy Albuquerque Oct 25 2011 | Police move in #occupyburque #ows ⁶

After President Schmidly, UNM, declared they would not renew the permit that has allowed Coyote Camp to function, several of the protesters formed a circle and stood their ground. There were too many Albuquerque Police, State Police and SWAT team members that arrived to count. Fully armed on unarmed, peaceful protesters. The circle was peacefully arrested, but later in the night, the police used their “strong arm” to break up the 99% crowd which refused to leave.

Here is some footage from last night. The first video is the circle singing before the arrival of the police. The second video is the group chanting “Down with Schmidly.” Then the next two are the police and SWAT team which arrived and pushed the crowd back into the street. Next, originally uploaded by WallStreetZombies, looks to appear to be the police pepper spraying the crowd in the street. Last video, by MichaelFilmaker, shows the arrests of those in the circle.

Update: Wednesday afternoon, October 26th, 2011: Occupy Albuquerque has been told today by UNM that we are NOT allowed to protest on the UNM campus else face arrest. Not even during normal hours of 7 AM to 10 PM.

After a very emotional today on the UNM campus, President Schmidly officially denied the permit to allow the Occupy Albuquerque protesters to remain on campus. Just a short while ago, State Representative Brian F. Egolf, Jr. penned a letter to President Schmidly requesting that he allow the protesters to remain on campus. Reply from Schmidly has not yet been received at the time of posting.
