I have been following the story of these twelve teenage girls from upstate New York who all mysteriously developed tic’s which are not unlike Tourette’s syndrome. They have been featured in several news stories for months now. They all have been experiencing sudden verbal outbursts, uncontrollable arm motions and facial tics. It appeared as though there was a toxin or infectious agent involved, but none were to be found.

Doctors have diagnosed most of the girls with a disorder: mass psychogenic illness — otherwise known as conversion disorder or, to use an outmoded term, mass hysteria.

More recently, three other students at Le Roy Junior Senior High School, including one boy, developed the same baffling condition, prompting parents to call in the big guns: environmental activist and heroine of a Julia Roberts movie, Erin Brockovich, who has just stepped in to investigate possible environmental causes.

Erin is investigating chemical contaminants under the school. Over the weekend, representatives of Brockovich were kicked off of the school’s campus when attempting to collect water samples.

Brockovich believes a 1970 train derailment three miles away from the school may have leaked 35,000 gallons of toxic chemicals into the ground and water.

In my opinion, the conversion disorder diagnosis is a bunch of horse shit. I may not be a doctor, nor a psychologist, but I do have twelve years of college and two degrees in science and technology combined. Science dictates that when twelve girls all living in the same area and attending the same school all suddenly develop strange symptoms such as these tic’s, there is an external factor common to all of them.

Toxic waste is new to our environment when you consider the age of the earth as a whole. Very new. Our planet evolved and changed through the geologic eras based upon the existing matter and weather at that time. It is a very delicate balance. Man has only been present for a mere fraction of a moment when considering the age of the earth. Imagine this… One day is 24 hours, right?. Blink your eyes once. That one blink in the span of a day is equivalent to the time man has been present on Earth. When man starts dumping in toxic waste, which was not previously present, the balance is altered and the earth’s evolution will change course. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. This goes for our environment as well, not just the laws of physics. Scientists have not yet been able to determine the long term results from toxic spills such as this train derailment. Yes, chemists are able to determine what the chemical breakdown will be, but nature always finds a way to work towards regaining the balance, and it may not be what man expects. For the doctors to completely rule out any toxic poison is completely foolish – and at a great expense to the teenagers, their family and friends.

These strange tic’s may not be due to the accident and toxic waste – but it must not be immediately ruled out due to fear but rather be fully investigated and considered as a source in order to best help these girls.

Here are some previous news coverages about these girls.

  1. Ruling out toxic poison is worse than foolish. What kind of people would not take this seriously?

  2. Both theories sound valid to me, and both should be investigated thoroughly until one or the other, or perhaps something else entirely, is determined to be the cause.

    1. I agree. I just hope it isn’t some cooked up scheme they all went in together on. I don’t think so, but kids these days…. 😐

  3. Mass hysteria is what caused the Witch Hunts. It’s a lazy, and in this case especially, lame diagnosis used when a doctor lacks understanding of the truth, or doesn’t want to search for the truth… for whatever reason.

    1. I agree. I just think it’s too coincidental to be a psychosis of some sort and further research – no matter it may be – should be pursued. I’m glad Erin stepped in.

  4. Anyone interested in this mysterious illness should not miss reading the book ” Saving Sammy”, by Beth Alison Maloney! It is the most empowering story of a smart mother that just doesn’t give up getting to the bottom of what is making her son sick. This was one eye opening book for me and should be a mandatory read at all medical schools. After reading this I don’t think there is anyway this is some kind of psychosis that can be helped with therapy!!!!! Check out http://www.SavingSammy.net/ It will give new light to OCD and PANDAS.
