Yes, you read correctly. Finally. After all these weeks of a lot of hard work and perseverance from the public, Florida state attorney announced today that George Zimmerman has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the February 26 shooting of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin. I suspected this would happen by several recent occurrences – primarily Zimmerman’s “donate for my defense” website.

Do I think that Zimmerman is guilty? Don’t know. Wasn’t there. From the evidence I have seen, I do not think he is innocent. He never should have chased that boy.

I am very pleased, though, because this is what should have been done in the first place. Anytime someone loses their life, especially when they are not armed – and no, Skittles and Arizona Iced Tea are not deadly weapons in my book – an investigation and all evidence needs to be collected immediately. This matter should never have been for a police officer or any political or elected official to decide on their own. This always should have been a matter for a judge and jury to decide. If any death is due to a true case of “stand your ground” then let the jury decide it is.

Ironically, more damage now has been done for Zimmerman than if they had charged him initially because an enormous amount of public knows the story. LOL… believe it or not, though, some have no idea. I mean utterly clueless. Like one of my co-workers. I mentioned Trayvon and Zimmerman just today at work, as I had a suspicion he would be arrested today, and my co-worker gave me that blank look of, “what are you talking about?” Okay… go back under your rock. See ya. Hey, would you mind paying my taxes for me since you obviously don’t mind that you’re paying too much yourself? Thanks!

Anyway, but since so many people know the story and the backlash reached a feverish level, it will be hard to find a complete set of jurors who will be able to judge fairly based on the facts. But, my co-workers naiveness did help reassure me that there are people out there who have no clue as to the story and circumstances involved. So quick! Find them and lock them up before they eventually catch wind! Actually, I am sure the news will settle a bit now. Not go away, but calm down. That’s the way society is here in the US. If it’s not hot and happening, it becomes forgotten. (sigh) There are people who hide under rocks and hopefully the lawyers will find them.

Will Zimmerman get off with this insane “Stand your ground” law? Hard to say. Many “professionals” seem to think so. But this complete non-professional-of-the-law person here (aka, me) feels that in the 911 call the moment we hear Zimmerman state he is following Trayvon, that right there should take away any ability to hide under the shelter of this law. Zimmerman gave that up the moment he took one step towards Trayvon.

Normally, I do not like reactions from the grandstanding, because no decision should be made under duress, nor as a “knee-jerk” reaction. However, in this case, it needed to be done, and I am very happy it finally worked. If the public had not stood up and fought like they did, I can pretty much guarantee nothing would have happened. The people, the public all cried “unfair” – another one of my least favorite words – but in this case, it is very appropriate, and they all stood their ground, held marches, vigils, and many other forms of both support for the Martin family as well as expressing their anger and dissatisfaction with the way Trayvon’s death was handled.

Kudos to all that participated whether out on the streets or via the waves of the internet.

Now, let’s hope that justice is properly done. This yet remains to be seen.

  1. It doesn’t matter whether or not it was self defence, murder is murder. There’s no justification.

    1. I was listening to talk radio on the way to work, and did you know that the military have MORE steps that they are required to take before they shoot than we are here in the US.

  3. There’s very little I’m certain of with this case other than if Zimmerman hadn’t been carrying a gun, Martin would still be alive. No matter what happened or what the intent was or what a jury says, Martin will still be dead and Zimmerman’s life will still be ruined. There’s a synergy between carry laws and “stand your ground” laws, and both need serious re-evaluation.

    1. I agree. Personally I think the “stand your ground” really needs to go away entirely. There will always be someone who abuses it and finds a way to legally justify it. There are laws that support those truly in self-defense. Let’s not add more ease to the killing.

I think Zimmerman became guilty the moment he decided to play cop and follow Trayvon. He had every intent on doing something – not necessarily shooting him – but in his mind, Trayvon was guilty before he could prove himself innocent.

  4. As one who stood up and fought for this I am happy that he has been arrested but I agree it will be almost impossible for a fair trial now.
As someone who lives in the UK ( and I know I’ve said this one here before !) I find it completely unbelievable that anyone can carry a gun so easily let alone shoot someone ( in whatever circumstances) and not be arrested.
The only facts we know are that Trayvon was not armed and the 911 call shows that Zimmerman was told not to follow and still did. Surely enough for an arrest on their own.
The laws there are CRAZY !!

  5. As they said during the press conference, this is just the first step, but at least it is a step forward. And about friggin’ time, too.

    1. Yes. Sadly, it’s a step that should have been taken that night. Now the clothes he was wearing are either gone or washed. The gunshot residue ballistics is gone. All this is in favor of Zimmerman. Sucks. Personally, I think the Martins have a very valid lawsuit against the police dept. because of all this. Especially if Zimmerman is not convicted.

      1. I know. I’m fearing the same sort of prosecution failure as there was in the Casey Anthony trial. But I’m also hoping it will be a lot more simple to prove – because Zimmerman got out of the car. He didn’t have to – no crime was being committed, no harm was being done, nobody was in danger. UNTIL he got out of the car. It all goes back to that point, for me, and I’m sure I’m oversimplifying it, but logic should just tell you that Zimmerman was the instigator and that he is accountable for everything that happened after he got out of that car.

        1. I agree. The moment the 911 operator requested that he not follow the “suspect,” he blew it. Very poor choice. If anything, if you really think someone is going to break in, you’ve called the police, they’re on their way. Let the suspect get caught by the police in the act of breaking in. This guy is a cop-wanna-be. He probably idolizes people like Rambo, Dirty Harry, etc. Not that they’re bad characters, but they always take matters into their own hands, win, and become a hero to many.

  6. In one of your replies you said “This guy is a cop-wanna-be.” After hearing the way in which he spoke with the 911 operators, that was word for word what I said, too. A cop wanna be hero… guess that didn’t work out too well for him, did it… And such a tragedy that a young life was taken because this guy wouldn’t back off and let the real police arrive on the scene. The irony here, is that Zimmerman has a prior criminal record from an incident in which he assaulted a cop in a convenience store. The guy was already bad news before the incident with Martin. I’m glad that he finally got arrested, but it should have happened the night Martin was killed, and not all this time later.

    1. It most absolutely should have. Now all the evidence is gone. It’s appears as though the police dept just wanted this event to go quietly away.
