There is nothing more memorable than a “mispelled” tattoo
One thing about tattoos, there is no eraser. No “delete” or “back” key. No “control + z” (keyboard command for undo). A tattoo is not an etch-a-sketch… you cannot shake it and start over. Romney has the patent on that.
Before getting a tattoo with any text of any type, it is highly recommended that a spell check is completed before the needle hits the skin. Google it. Grammar check it. If you and/or the artist’s English is not very strong, write it down and find someone whose English IS strong – neighbor, friend, teacher, librarian, convenience store clerk – and double/triple check the hell out of it. Have the paper with the CORRECT text right there next to the artist. Tic off each letter as the artist progresses. An ounce of prevention is worth a forever-lasting misspelled tattoo. When it comes to lettering, cover-ups just don’t do very well.
Here are some photos that some tattoo-ees (is that a word? Well, it is now) have shared online. A few of them may be fixed without too much work. But most will only provide an excellent visual aid as to why a student needs to study and learn their English.

“REGRET NOHING”?? I’m willing to bet they regretted getting that tattoo once they realized “nothing” was misspelled.
.

Am I “jalous” over that tattoo?? Hell, NO! Oh, and check out the “signature,” made by who? It looks like “Susie” but with the second “s” missing….
.

Oh, yeah. It’s hilariously tragic…. And to make it even worse, the letters in “TRADGEY” are extra bold!
.

Wouldn’t that be just a kick in the butt if this student had majored in English… (fyi… it’s Clemson University, not Clemons)

.

Actually the tattoo is so bad that no one may even notice that “watch” is misspelled. Ummm… just keep your shirt on.
.

So it would appear. Hint… if doing a home-job, at least get out the Sharpie and draw the work on first.
.

Would that be the “strenth & courage” to beat the crap out of the tattoo artist for leaving the “g” out of “strength”?
.

Honestly, I have NO idea what this is supposed to be. It’s just messed up all the way around. But I do like the font the artist used….
.
.

This looks more like a Photoshop job to me and not a tattoo. Either way, though, I like the creativity. Now here’s my “coment”… “Webster’s Dictionary”
.

With that tattoo? It’s more likely you’ll be fucked with and laughed at by the system with that misspelling.
.
Tomorrow, tomorrow. There’s always tomorrow. But you cannot erase a misspelled tattoo….

One of the more common misspellings we see these days, especially on the internet, is the improper usage of “your” and “you’re.” Well, same thing goes for tattoos….
.
.
.

This one is just messed up all the way around. Besides the “your”, “its” should be “it’s” and “delt” should be “dealt.” Coverup possibility: A big black cloud.
.
“To” versus “Too”
.
.
Apparently “believe” is also a difficult word to spell….

And lastly is a tattoo featuring a quote from Abraham Lincoln’s First Inaugural Address on March 4, 1861 in Washington, D.C.ย There are three misspelled words and the lack of punctuation makes it more difficult to understand. The correct quote is below the photo.
This is a shorter commonly used, but correct, version of the quote in the tattoo above:
โWe are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory will swell when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.โ
~ Abraham Lincoln
The full version of this quote is as follows:
“I am loath to close. We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battle-field, and patriot grave, to every living heart and hearth-stone, all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.”
I have friends with a kid who got Carpe Diem mispelled on his arm.
Sigh.
Ouch.
๐
Furthermore, the question mark after “… are you Jalous” is upside down.
I noticed that. I just figured that was because they’re Hispanic since the Spanish question mark is upside down.
In Spanish, the one at the beginning is upside down. The one at the end is supposed to be right side up. Maybe it’s some idiomatic usage or something.
Who knows… But they messed up regardless
Great post, Michael! (kidding) ๐
I don’t have any tattoos because I’ve just never really wanted one, and ever since I was in my teens I’ve been skeptical of the whole idea of marking my body with something that is permanent and almost impossible to remove or change.
What if you don’t like the results as soon as you get the tattoo, because it doesn’t look the way you were expecting it to? Gee, I guess you’re stuck with a look you don’t like, and permanently. Now that would suck…
And what if a tattoo that you thought was amazing and cool when you were 20 yrs old, seems stupid and ridiculous, now that you’re 30? Well too bad, cause you’re stuck with your own stupid and ridiculous choice from when you were 10 years younger.
It would be kinda like having to listen to the same Black Sabbath album every single day for ten years, even though now you hate it, but you have to keep listening because you loved it back when you were a lot younger and had very different ideas about your favorite music. You’ve gotten older and more mature in the last 10 years, and your taste in music has become more sophisticated? You’ve come to the point that you really like jazz and Miles Davis?
Well that’s just too bad! Because when you looked in the mirror this morning, the mirror said “Cue up Black Sabbath!”
And how about those tattoos proclaiming your undying love to your lover, using his or her name? Must be a real drag to see that name every morning, now that it’s the name of your ex-lover, who broke your heart after cheating on you with a close friend, and then dumped you… What an inspiring way to start another new day!
And now, thanks to you Michelle, there’s a draw back that I never even thought of… spelling mistakes that make you look stupid, and in some cases, to look very funny to people who do know how to spell, and can’t help laughing when they see you with your “Sweet Pee” tattoo. Lol – And maybe you got that “No Regert” tattoo, too. Which would be very regerttable indeed. Lol
Or you wanted a tattoo to show everyone that you’re a dark and menacingly evil bad ass, with a tattoo that proclaims “Satan Lives”. But you ended up with “Satin Lives”, and now you look like the title of a Harlequin romance novel. Lol ๐
Albuquerque is flooded with tattoos here. I would guess that 75% of the people I know have at least one tattoo. Probably around 40% have a LOT of tattoos. I have a couple myself – home jobs. Done by a friend with just black ink. I have “mi vida loca” next to my left eye (that’s three small dots in the shape of a triange). Then I have a small Anasazi-style gecko on the back of my left calf. And a larger gecko on the back of my left hamstring, about 5 inches below my butt. Slight problem with that one, though. I drew it, and it was a pretty damn good drawing. Buy my friend did the work… and the lizard has a bit of an overbite…. But should I ever decide to spend the money, I will get that fixed and add some very vibrant colors. I always had a vision of tattooing several lizards/geckos all climbing up the back, left half of my body. From my toes up to the back of my left shoulder blade. And have some vivid green vines and leaves all intertwining with them. Then at the top, across my shoulder blades would be a red rock mesa scene…. It’s a rock climbing thing. But I seriously doubt I’ll ever do that. My body is getting old and not in the shape it used to be. So I don’t show it off like I used to do. (sigh)
I have some freckles with somewhat interesting shapes. No, actually I just have some freckles. ๐ I guess that you’re just more daring than I am, when it comes tattoos, Michelle. Yours sound interesting, and I’ll bet they look good on you.
I don’t mind the look of tattoos on other people, and I’ve seen some that are real works of art. I guess the idea of having my own has just never appealed to me. Why would I want to spoil the blinding winter whiteness of my Northern European skin with some creative color? And hey, I have some freckles! ๐ If I use lots of sun screen, I can get a halfway decent tan during the summer, and not look as white as Casper the friendly ghost, or maybe Anderson Cooper.
Now body painting is a whole other story for me, and a story that would be TMI if I went into much detail, so I’ll be good for a change and not do that. I’ll just add that I’ve been known to turn into quite an artist, when I get to use an attractive woman’s body for my canvass. And yes, I’ve let her be an artist on my canvass as well.
But I just wasn’t using my head that time when on a whim, I decided to surprise my wife by painting a bright yellow smiley face on my other head. All I accomplished was to startle her when she first saw it, and then ruin the mood when she said it reminded her too much of Wall-mart screwing their employees. Just not one of my better ideas at all!
And another thing! Lol ๐ I was kinda long winded with my comments and replies last night, but I still forgot to include something very important.
Which is that your spelling FAIL tattoos had me laughing like a wild hyena, and loud enough to wake up my sound asleep wife! LOL ๐
I also laughed at your captions. You can be quite witty when you head in a humorous direction, Michelle! ๐
Oh Good Lord! It is funny to read the tats but it I enjoyed it more with the captions!
