PETITION against Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) on “Legitimate Rape”

Recently, Representative Todd Akin (R-MO), a Tea Party-backed candidate for US Senate, recently said:

“From what I understand from doctors, pregnancy [as a result of rape], is really rare. If it’s a “legitimate” rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

Below is a video of the interview. Akin is now back-peddling and trying to claim that is not what he meant. Well, it appears to me that is EXACTLY what he meant. It wasn’t a slip of the tongue… he carefully and precisely chose his words.

By the way, according to the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology:

“…among adult women an estimated 32,101 pregnancies result from rape each year.”

Todd Akin is running for senate. Please, Missouri citizens, do not vote for this “thing.”

A petition has been created by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee to call on Speaker John Boehner to remove Akin from the House Science and Technology Committee. Not that I have much faith in Boehner, these are the steps which need to be taken. I have signed the petition and I encourage all to do so. No one deserves to be a part of running our country who believes something like this.

I am so livid right now! “Legitimate rape”????? What the hell is “legitimate” rape? This indicates that Akin believes that there are rapes which are NOT legitimate. Akin, what classifies a non-legitimate rape? The woman had too much to drink? She was wearing a short skirt? She walked by a dark alley by herself at night? She flirted with a guy at the bar? Akin, if you are married, I hope your wife kicks you to the curb as you deserve it. If you have a daughter or daughters, they must be very embarrassed and ashamed of their father.

Todd Akin : Legitimate Rape Victims Rarely Get Pregnant

UPDATE

Today, President Obama spoke about Todd Akin’s comment. Bravo, Barack! LOL… for some reason, though, I have a sneaking suspicion that Michelle is right behind you poking you in the ribs to get out there and tell it like it is!

  1. I’ve been fuming over this since I first heard about it. “Legitimate rape doesn’t result in pregnancy … the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.” Did he flunk 10th grade biology!!?? Rape is rape. And he’s on the Science and Technology Committee?? What a cretin!

        • He is a done deal..As we all know, The state of Missouri is crazy but St.Louis brings the sanity back..Thats because people can read and write because they have universities there….I grew up in a rural area. But they are just like everyone else…A southern Baptist kid like many other kids, has a crush on his third grade teacher, only difference, he is home schooled.

  2. I can only get XM in my car but I’ll being watching ‘Big Ed’ this afternoon. I’ve also signed the petition and posted it to Facebook. How this guy can be on the Science and Technology Committee is beyond me. Then again, Michelle Bachmann is on the Intelligence Commitee….go figure.

  3. I went one step further and posted the following directly to the home page of the committee on science, space, and technology at http://science.house.gov/contact-us/email-us

Dear committee chair Representative Hall and other members of the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology.

Upon hearing and reviewing the comments made my committee member Rep Todd Akins regarding his belief regarding rape and conception and the idea that “the female body has a ways to try to shut that whole thing down”, I feel it is your duty as members of this committee and elected officials of our United States to remove Rep Todd Akins from this committee or at the very least encourage his voluntary resignation from the committee.

His views on life an abortion are not a point of concern for me. What is shocking and completely unacceptable is his utter lack of understanding of basic science and reproductive biology. Representative Akins clearly has no place on a committee that has jurisdiction over such a broad and important range of areas. The functions of this committee must be executed with a strong foundation in basic science and a basic respect for science and the scientific process.

Representative Akins’ comments make it clear he is not qualified to sit on this important committee. Please take all steps to ensure he no longer plays a future role in the committee.

    • Obama addressed this today, but I was driving so only heard a few seconds before I had to get out of the car. Going to find it on the internet. He has finally HAD it with these men deciding what to do with women’s bodies. I have a feeling that Michelle is in the background with a cattle prod on this one… 😉

Go ahead... I can hear your thoughts. Please share with the rest!
