How the War on Women’s March Came to Be | List of all state & city websites for the marches

I honestly cannot find any other way or words to tell the story of how the upcoming March on April 28th came to be. So here is the short article from Addicting Info. A very important read to understand where so many women are coming from who are in support of the War on Women movement.

I will be attending the march in Santa Fe this Saturday, and I have been looking forward to this from day one of the creation of the event. Camera and video recorder will be in hand, so look for the photos and video afterwards. Now, from Addicting Info:

WOMEN FOR WOMEN – Karen Teegarden and Desiree Jordan

When Komen announced the defunding of Planned Parenthood, the sleeping giant that is WOMAN fully awoke and she was in a bitch of a mood. The nightmare of 2011, wherein 19 states passed a total of 162 laws telling women what they could and couldn’t do with their bodies, had given her a pounding headache. That 49% of these laws profoundly weakened a woman’s legal right to an abortion, and that 2012 had seen and would see even more of this kind of chip-chip away legislation, the re-shaping and ultimate destruction of a woman’s legal right to an abortion in 2012 was a distinct possibility. There should be a march, WOMAN said.

A brief interruption by Michelle at Motley News: Brief comment here… I LOVE “…WOMAN fully awoke and she was in a bitch of a mood.” That statement is so completely true. We have awoken and we are pissed off. Additionally, I am still shocked at the number of laws passed in 2011 alone. Now, back to the article.

In the wee, wee hours of the morning Karen Teegarden and her friend Desiree Jordan, along with an awful lot of other women venting to their friends in the wee, wee hours of the morning, were thinking along the same lines. “We should just do it,” Desiree said, “if we build it, they will come.” The next morning Karen Teegarden started a new Facebook group, “Organizing Against the War On Women.” She posted it on her wall, other people’s walls, and asked Desiree to do the same. Within twenty-four hours there were almost 500 people asking to join and offering up their skills. Six weeks later, “Unite Against the War On Women,” had over 21,000 members, a Facebook page with almost 17,000 likes, over 2,300 twitter followers, a YouTube channel, a weekly update on blogtalkradio, and a newly launched website.

“Organizing Against the War on Women,” was one of the many excellent Facebook pages that burst on the scene after Komen. Created by pro-choice women for pro-choice women, spreading news, information, petitions, and phone numbers, the pages had the same effect on the tribe of women that water has on the desert: there was a blooming of beautiful loud. No way was Issa going to get away with an all male panel on contraception. No way was Limbaugh going to get away with calling Sandra Fluke a slut. No way was an anti-choice measure going to be passed without thousands of petitions and emails working to stop it. The pay off from all this activity is anti-choice elected officials, unused as they are to being held accountable for their actions, are starting to worry about their job security. That’s why the staunchly Republican Oklahoma and Mississippi voted against the latest anti-abortion measures; they fear for their jobs and they also fear more amendments along the lines of Senator Constance Johnson’s, regulating the seed spilling activities of men by declaring wasted sperm an act against unborn children. The pressure is on. Thousands of women, and the men who love them, marching in the streets in state capitols across the country, who have every intention of voting in November, applies even more pressure. The timing of this march is perfect. Thank you Karen, thank you Desiree, for making the dream real.

Remember… VOTING this November and every ballot after is so VERY IMPORTANT to fighting this war. We must vote out those who are taking away our rights as women.

  2. I’m beginning to think that I should send Komen a sarcastically biting “thank you note”, and written on pink paper of course… And 19 states in one year passing a total of 162 laws telling women what they could and couldn’t do with their bodies is appalling, intolerable and unacceptable.

    My wife and I will be marching together in Boston this Saturday. I’ve already got an idea for a poster to carry to also take a shot at our mistake of a republican senator; Scott Brown. It will be that photo of him posing nude in Cosmo back in the day, and the caption will read “It was OK when HE did it, but NOT OK for WOMEN!” But I think maybe I’ll let my wife carry it… Me walking around with a nude poster of Scott Brown might just feel a little weird for me… Lol

    Thanks for posting all those links Michelle, because this is a vitally important event and a strong show of force is what we really need. Thanks also for emphasizing how important it is to get out and VOTE!

  3. Michelle you RAWK. Joined the FB Nevada group. Naturally the only ‘real’ March is in Las Vegas. this may be a ‘blue’ state but I am surrounded by rednecks with pitbulls (=small penis), women who are no more than LDS slaves (though not LDS, they are all in Vegas -seriously) and the weirdness of one of the most ‘liberal’ states in the Union. Liberal in that there is legal gambling, 24/7 alcohol availability and legal prostitution in half of our counties. Think the last says it all.
    Oh our governor is a Dem but may as well be a close personal friend of Rush. You have to live here to see what he is doing to the northern Nevada water rights, wildlife, farming and receiving pay-offs from large conglomerates To the benefit of Las Vegas.
    Unluckily Reno is one of Time’s Top 10 Cities that will never recover from the recession.

    Allegedly a march in Carson City (maybe) -the capitol, which is 45 minutes from here in Reno. Can only imagine there will be all of 5 women present. If any. IF their shotgun, dog toting, uneducated husbands allow them.

    Growing up in LA, then spending 10 years in NYC after college this is killing me.

    Naturally Reno, home of University of Nevada (UNR), Biggest Little City in the World, Nevada Museum of Art, has NO IDEA of what women are facing. It is sad that Las Vegas, everyone’s fave Sin City, has a larger contingent and interest in this

    This is a link of yet another blow to women’s rights here in Nevada. BTW the Pahrump Times IS a real newspaper heh. Located outside of Vegas, and one of the few counties that does allow legal prostitution. Even better; thinking the hookers AND redneck residents know how wrong this is.

  5. I’ve not read anywhere if there was a reason for choosing April 28. I did read somewhere that all this just started rolling in February and I’m a little concerned that April 28 comes too soon to generate the huge turnout I’d like to see — although one could also argue that the rallies are what’s need to bring more attention to the movement in this election year. I just want this to be HUGE and I worry that there hasn’t been time enough to build the necessary momentum.

    • Damn straight! Gonna fight to keep it free at least. Beginning to wonder these days. Especially if the wacko right wing-nuts have their way. We’ll all be required to do multiple daily prayers, shine our hubbies shoes, and wear dresses again – even when housecleaning. (Enter June Cleaver)
