What a horrible thing to wake up to this morning. I sleep with my television on, so I woke up hearing the news coverage of the shootings on CNN before I even opened my eyes. All day long, as more details come in both about the incident as well as the killer, James Holmes, I become more and more bewildered continually asking out loud to no one, “Why?”

Why?

Jimmy Holmes was a mainstream American kid. Actually, more so above average especially when compared to our youth today. In this photo of Holmes, he looks happy. His eyes are twinkling and he has a genuine smile on his face. That is not the photo of a killer – one would think. He was an honor student, played varsity soccer in high school, and he had enrolled last year in a neuroscience Ph.D. program at the University of Colorado-Denver but was in the process of withdrawing, said school officials, who didn’t provide a reason.

Why?

James Holmes | His Background

The police have run thorough background checks on Holmes and the ONLY thing which show up is ONE speeding ticket. That’s it. A speeding ticket. The online background check has revealed that Jim Holmes is not a social media user, nor is there anything with even the slightest hint of his murderous plan. Neighbors, family and friends typically describe him as a quiet person who keeps to himself. He has never been known or seen to act violently in any manner.

Why?

James Holmes | His Arsenal and Body Armor

It just doesn’t “fit.” We now see that this massacre was completely and carefully premeditated. Never having been arrested and with a spotless record, purchasing guns was a piece of cake for James. He bought his first Glock pistol in Aurora, Colo., on May 22. Six days later, he picked up a Remington shotgun in Denver. About two weeks later, he bought a .223 caliber Smith & Wesson rifle in Thornton, Colo., and then a second Glock in Denver on July 6 — 13 days before the shooting. Investigators also found a drum magazine, capable of carrying 100 rounds of ammunition, which was attached to the AR-15 rifle. Authorities also searched the suspect’s car in the parking lot of the movie theater and found more magazines and ammunition. The suspect purchased 6,000 rounds of ammo over the Internet, Police Chief Dan Oates said. All this was done legally.

What bothers me even more is the fact that he had purchased a huge amount of body armor. Holmes very carefully covered and protected the vital parts of his body by wearing a bullet-proof vest; ballistic helmet and protective ballistic gear for his legs, throat and groin; black gloves; and a gas mask.

James Holmes did not want to die. He wanted to walk away from this massacre alive.  Why???

Police state that when they caught him, he pulled of his helmet and mask to reveal recently dyed red hair and commented that he was the “Joker.” I’m not sure I’m buying this one. Holmes may have said that, but with an intelligence level he has, could this not be way to distract the investigators from the truth? Almost like a cat and mouse game. I rather think that Holmes is playing mind games with the law and investigators.

Why?

Additionally, the suspect has completely booby-trapped his apartment. Police have described a scene with wires running all throughout in addition to large jugs of liquid – possibly flammable or explosive. When James last left his apartment around midnight, he left some techno music on playing very loudly and purposely to disturb the neighbors. Was he hoping for a front door entrance to trip some chain reaction of explosions?

Or is he playing mind games?

When thinking back about many of the previous massacres, such as Columbine and Virginia Tech, most of time something traumatic has happened in the killers life whether it be the victim of bullying, a broken heart, failure in school, and so on. Other than withdrawing from his PhD program – which he was not failing – no one knows of any recent event, or any event which may have wounded him for life. At least no one has yet come forth.

James Holmes | The Colorado Theater Massacre has similarities to the Oslo massacre which occurred one year ago on July 22, 2011

When thinking back at several of the more recent mass shooting, I realized that the movie theater massacre is one year after the Oslo Norway massacre on Utoya island where 80 people were murdered in cold blood by Anders Behring Breivik. Now, to be precise, the Oslo murders were on July 22nd – but that day so happened to be a Friday, which is today, but one year ago. Holmes’ choice of movies I believe is simply because he knew that the theater would be full. Plus later at night there are fewer people out and about which makes staying out of view much easier to accomplish.

Is there a tie between the two? If so, I doubt it is anything political and am fairly confident that there was no interaction between Holmes and Breivik in the past. Perhaps Holmes worshipped Anders? After all, there are a lot of similarities between the two. Anders started out by bombing a government building. This drew the law enforcement to that location while he moved on his way to his true destination – Utoya Island and the campers. Anders was dressed as though he was an officer, thus being able to easily approach the campers. Then he pulled out an assault rifle and fired away killing eighty people.

What if Holmes planned his apartment to be the attention-grabber by exploding? What if he has his door rigged so that a heavy knock, or jiggling the door handle, or even opening the door as it may be unlocked. The police have not yet tried to enter the front door due to all the wiring. Therefore, Holmes was hoping that an unsuspecting neighbor would become annoyed enough go to his apartment to ask him to turn down the music. However he has it rigged, it explodes – and appears it may be rather violently with all the jugs and wiring the bomb experts can see.

Then while the police and emergency responders are at his apartment, Holmes is quietly entering into the movie theater during the midnight premier showing of the third movie in the Batman series, The Dark Knight Rises. He then tosses a gas canister in the audience to cause confusion, then opens fire with the automatic rifle releasing hundreds of rounds in just seconds, which is very much the same manner that Anders did one year ago. When Holmes stopped shooting, he calmly left to return to his car, where he was captured and arrested. Perhaps he thought he would have more time since most of the police force would, or should have been at the exploding apartment building.

Coincidence? Or planned? Does James Holmes idolize massacre killers, specifically Anders Behring Breivik?

In remembrance of the innocent victims. Artist unknown.

  1. My cousin’s daughter lost one friend there. She was shot in the head. Three other people she knows were injured, one critically, including an 8 year old girl whom she babysits. The young girl was sitting in the adjoining theater and was shot in the leg by one of the rounds that went through the wall.

From what I’ve seen on the news thus far, your thoughts about how he rigged his apartment, possibly intending for all of that to go off and be used as a diversion so he could cause more human suffering seem right on target. In an interview with his neighbors, the woman stated she banged on his door to complain about the loud music and even thought of entering, but decided not to do so. Very smart move, because how the apartment is rigged is incredible. Police are saying it may take days to safely remove all the triggering devices, liquids, and canisters of bullets in order for them to enter the place.

Why? I doubt we’ll ever know. He’s refusing to cooperate. I keep asking this question when it comes to how cruelly humans treat each other and I just can’t understand it. The mind games people play; virtual mine fields of hateful treatment; tearing others down to make themselves feel better…

Then this horrible act; yet another in America’s long history of mass murders. Only this one doesn’t end in the typical way, and the killer doesn’t fit the typical profile.

No wonder I no longer feel safe… anywhere.

  3. What people should be asking is not why he did it but how he was able to buy so many guns and ammunition over a short period. I know I have spoken on your blog before about my amazement at the gun laws in America and here’s another example of it..

Sadly I believe the NRA has the goverment in it’s pocket. The right to bear arms was written into the constitution in 1791 when things were QUITE different.. possessing a shotgun to shoot snakes, rats etc is one thing but to possess a gun for self defence to protect yourself from others with guns is just plain crazy!! To be able to buy guns in the way he did is unbelievable to most people way past the time when it should have been stopped.

I visited the NRA’s facebook page last night (over 1,500,000 likes !) and wrote some peaceful comments similar to the above on a few of the threads… within 5 mins they had been removed and I had been blocked from posting anymore or even from emailing the NRA direct.. speaks volumes.. many of the thousands of comments on there are just too depressing and crazy for words and these people OWN guns…. Should America be proud of it’s 2nd Amendment? I don’t think so… Will anything change? sadly not..

History will tell you that if some one(s) will decide to kill – there are kitchen utensils, karate or chemicals, gasoline, etc.
Search on “false flag” and you may find what was the real back-end to this story. And pls, stop referring to tv as a source of “news”.

        1. Kolyan… Yes, if someone wants to kill they will. But if this guy, or the guy in Newtown, or Columbine, or the temple in Wisconsin, had walked in with a knife rather than a weapon with a large capacity magazine pumping bullets through either a semi- or full-automatic, would any of them killed this many innocent people? Please. I’d love to hear a valid explanation as to how someone with a knife, kitchen utensils or chemicals would be able to kill like this.

Unless you were there, then you get your “news” the same way as the rest of us. And it all starts with the TV and the press.

      1. I’m sorry but I just couldn’t help myself in light of what I read on the NRA website and what happened to me.. There was a post on there about the 14 year old boy who shot armed robbers as they entered the house/left the house depending on what reports you read .. no mention about if there wweren’t so many guns so easily available would the intruder have had a gun?? or what the hell a 14 yr old boy was doing home alone babysitting 8,10 and 12 year olds.. that would be illegal in the Uk !!

        1. Here in the states, a 14-yr old babysitter is normal. I used to at that age all the time. Not newborns, but youngsters. I think I babysat when I was 13. A neighbor girl that was 6 or 8 yrs old. It was fun.

Don’t be sorry, though. I’ve been wavering back and forth about our gun laws and the second amendment for some time. I have felt like we do need stricter gun laws, and after this incident, most definitely. Plus when our forefathers declared that every citizen has a right to bear arms, I don’t think they were imagining what we have now. Back then it was a musket and it WAS a means of survival. Necessary for hunting food – they didn’t have a local Super Walmart back then. Plus, it was needed for personal safety – like attacks from bears.

        2. Of course it was completely different when Bill of Rights was formulated.. If people want guns for sport let them join a gun club where the guns are kept securely at the club premises which is what happens here.. and likewise for farmers. There are ways of tightening laws to make things safer and get guns off the streets.. but the will is not there…

          Like

        3. For some time I have remained neutral on gun laws, and that’s because I was raised around them – hunters. No handguns but all hunting rifles. And our gun “laws” in our house were very very strict. There was no joking when it came to guns. And they were stored properly. In responsible hands, they are no threat to fellow man.

But I’ve had to come to accept the fact that most people are not like that. We definitely need to change something. What I’m not happy with at all is that he was able to buy 4 pieces within two months. I think there should be a time restriction on purchased – no exceptions. Cannot purchase a firearm within one full year from the last purchase.

Plus, there is no reason to own an assault rifle at all. Unless you’re military or law enforcement. Absolutely no reason. I can guarantee a shotgun would have never caused that amount of damage and death.

        4. As far as I know it is legal to leave teens at age of over 12 at home alone. So he/she could legally babysit.
Btw, does police story reported intruders got their weapon(s) from the “wannabe” rubbed house? Or they come with theirs? Why don’t you analyze for yourself?

Please do not forget, times may change but human behavior is not changing.
So whatever was seems as a tread for the Founding Fathers and this country back then, very well may repeat tomorrow. Not with idiotic fakes a.k.a “Red Dawn” but from within, by your very own Big Brother. Not by dropping foreign storm troopers from airplane, but by slow and devastating intrusion of crooks and liars into the Congress; by establishing tighter and tighter economical and fiscal rules and regulations, privatizing your country’s Monetary Policy, banknotes emission and circulation, Foreign Policy, International Affairs, … do I need to continue? And all this is just to prepare their safe existence, when you, me and another 170 millions of proud citizens will finally get “The Message”. Basically all these shootings are setups to enforce all kinds of Laws to simply disarm “The People”.
Do you remember how feudals in “pre-westernized” Japan prevent their lives? Exactly the same way – they endorsed full disarmament of their own people. Only loyal samurais and guards aside of rulers were allowed to carry their weapons.

        7. In other words, the URL I gave you is still an active NRA group page. It may be one of the groups that was converted to the newer group style and is now archived, but the fact remains, the wall is now “private” because I can see “friend activity” when I click on that option. It is more than simply an info page.

You and Helen are correct, though. The NRA has shut their walls to public comment and are censoring. That much is clear.

  5. Well, here’s my theory. Holmes is a loner; an obviously brilliant loner, but a loner who became so pathologically lonely, and tortured by his invisible anonymity, that he didn’t want to just join in the huge and exciting buzz surrounding “The Dark Knight Rises” and go see the movie; he wanted to be in the movie. He wanted to become the movie’s biggest star, by turning into the movie’s most notorious villain. And Holmes didn’t want to just play the role, he wanted to be a real life murderous villain based upon a famous villain in previous Batman movies; The Joker.

Holmes knew that becoming a real life version of The Joker, and going on a mass murder spree as the movie began, would take him from being an invisible anonymous loner who is desperately lonely to the point of insanity, to becoming the most well known and infamous villain in all the history of the Batman saga. He’s spent all his life feeling deprived of the attention of other people, and now he has the attention of almost the entire world.

The reality that it’s negative attention of the worst kind doesn’t bother him at all, because after all, it fits right in with his new identity as one of the most terrible villains in modern history. All his life, he’s felt like a pathetic joke, but now the entire world knows that he’s really The Joker. The elaborate explosive booby trap that he rigged his apartment with, is like something straight out of a Batman story line, and fits in with his new identity as The Joker perfectly.

And yes, James Holmes definitely wants to be alive, and to live forever as The Joker. He wants to ride his insane crazy train for as long as he possibly can. He is probably fantasizing right now about TV interviews, writing a book, and having books written about him… And maybe even a movie made about him, and how he became the Batman movie villain who turned into a real villain, and the most evil incarnation ever, of The Joker.

The Joker is wild, and he loves it.

    1. Interesting…. but something in my gut just tells me this had nothing to do with Batman, the Joker or anything else related. It just so happens that the opening show of this movie was prime for his task he set forth. A theater FULL of people. Late, so minimal people out and about.

      1. You could be right, because I’m just speculating in my theory, with almost no hard facts to go on. But I think that we’ll learn a lot more about who James Holmes really is, once law enforcement is able to defuse the explosives in the booby trap Holmes rigged his apartment with, and get inside to investigate his personal living space.

Only those with closed minds approach the archaic term of “retarded.” I see a world where each person is unique until themselves and each one hold their own special ability that no one else has. In fact, I started playing as a way to enjoy spending time with my son. The people I met in game were as normal as any large group of strangers you might encounter who shared a similar interest. I think there is a third party involved which provided James Holmes with the weapons and the explosives and taught him how to set up booby traps. He was unemployed and a medical student, were did he get the money for all this? that’s my question.
