NH’s largest newspaper, New Hampshire Union Leader, apologizes for having endorsed Christie
Not sure whether to laugh or cry, although laughing is winning…. It is this kind of crap that drives people away from our political system – specifically the Republican Party – and, in turn, to support Trump, a.k.a., Drumpf.
On November 28, the Union Leader, New Hampshire’s largest newspaper, endorsed their support for Chris Christie’s run for president and described Christie as “a solid, pro-life conservative” who “has the range and type of experience the nation desperately needs.” The newspaper also published numerous editorials that praised and defended Christie as well as including editorials that attacked Christie’s opponents. But on February 29, following Christie’s endorsement of GOP front-runner Donald Trump on February 26, the paper’s publisher John M. McQuaid finally admitted to readers, "Boy, were we wrong" about endorsing Christie:
We endorsed Chris Christie in the New Hampshire Presidential Primary. Despite his baggage, we thought that as a Republican governor in a Democratic-leading state he had the skills and experience the presidency needs (and hasn’t had of late). We also thought he had the best chance to take on and face down Donald Trump.
Watching Christie kiss the Donald’s ring this weekend — and make excuses for the man Christie himself had said was unfit for the presidency — demonstrated how wrong we were. Rather than standing up to the bully, Christie bent his knee. In doing so, he rejected the very principles of his campaign that attracted our support.
Voters here apparently knew better than we. Most rejected Christie but divided their votes among several others, leaving Trump to claim victory. And now, despite specifically telling us that he would never endorse him, Christie is backing Trump.
Shortly after Hurricane Sandy, I actually gained a small amount of respect for Christie. During the entire Obama presidency, most Republicans have gone, and still go, out of their way to bash Obama in any way they can. However, when Obama came to Christie’s aid with emergency funds for New Jersey, Christie genuinely thanked Obama. Christie could have easily turned that move against Obama by stating it wasn’t enough money… didn’t get the funds fast enough…… you get the picture. But Christie did not. Now that sliver of respect is loooong gone and will never return.
Then, tonight, it was truly revolting to see that smug face standing behind Trump while Trump spewed more vitriol-laced lies to the public. I’m pretty sure, though, that I saw a look in his eyes, after Trump called Rubio the big loser for the night, that said, "Oh f***, what have I done?"
