20 Signs of Impending Tyranny

  • Demand personal loyalty from all appointees.
  • Organize military parades and other choreographed shows of force.
  • Threaten to fire independent prosecutors who get too close to the truth.
  • Spread conspiracy theories about “deep state” forces seeking to oust the tyrant.
  • Refer to top-ranking military leaders as “my” generals.
  • Threaten to jail political opponents.
  • Claim to have won an election by a landslide even after losing the popular vote.
  • Stoke tensions abroad, even the specter of nuclear war, to distract from the tyrant’s efforts to consolidate power at home.
  • Circumvent the independent press and communicate directly with followers.
  • Vilify legislators and judges who are critical of the regime.
  • Repeatedly claim massive voter fraud in the absence of any evidence, in order to restrict voting in subsequent elections.
  • Turn the public against journalists or media outlets that criticize the regime, calling them “deceitful” and “scum.”
  • Repeatedly tell big lies, causing the public to doubt the truth and to believe fictions that support the tyrants’ goals
  • Blame economic stresses on immigrants or racial or religious minorities, and foment public bias and hatred against them.
  • Threaten mass deportations, registries of religious minorities, and the banning of refugees.
  • Attribute acts of domestic violence to “enemies within,” and use such events as excuses to beef up internal security and limit civil liberties.
  • Appoint family members to high positions of authority.
  • Draw no distinction between personal property and public property, profiteering from public office.
  • Make personal alliances with foreign dictators, but express indifference if not defiance toward leaders of democracies.
  • Maintain a powerful propaganda arm that claims to be “fair and balanced” but only amplifies the tyrant’s lies and accusations.

I believe we can tick off the list one by one as done.

  1. Any day now he’s going to bomb that underground nuke factory in Iran and then boast about it as though he’s been in charge of everything all along. So what if American soldiers have to go fight and die in another stupid Middle East war. All he knows about the military is bone spurs are a deferment. And, oh yes, American soldiers who fight and die overseas are “suckers” and “losers.” (And suddenly, from my childhood, comes the taunt “Takes one to know one!”)

That’s all. My BP is rising. I’m outta here.

      1. Well, I was doing well, but somehow I managed to lose it all. Start over. My wife and I had these great neighbors for about fifteen years. They were from Jalisco and shortly after moving in they had identical twin girls. We got to watch as the girls grew into adolescence. It was very interesting as I always assumed that identical twins meant just that, identical. Not so. About a month age I started getting odd vibes and wondered if the neighbors were OK. I ask the husband and he said “what could you do for us?”. I realized I was probably limited in more than one way, but I looked at him and said “I could give you money if you needed it”. He laughed and hit me on the shoulder. By then they had almost emptied the house. There is one word no one says ‘ICE’. I am pretty sure that it was to be a strategic move to buy them some privacy and maybe anonymity. After about three weeks I sent an email. The wife said that they were close and someday they would stop by and see us. Better buy some beer.

        1. Phil, I couldn’t fix the subscription thing on my end when it occurred several months ago. WP’s only suggestion was to tell you to subscribe again.

  2. Well, he did it. I can’t tell you how incompetent I think Trump and his advisors are. The last people in the world I’d trust to run a war.
